Ongoing evolution of materials

Sorel Forge is known for its alloy steels used in the making of mold for the plastic injection industry. The outstanding quality of our steels is assured by rigorous controls at every step of the process. At Sorel Forge, in a demonstration of confidence, we support our SF-2000 mold steel by our "material and labour" warranty, your guarantee for unmatched quality.

Sorel Forge also supplies quality forgings to many industrial sectors such as heavy machinery, power generation, pulp and paper, steel processing, mining and petrochemical industry. Our custom forging line of products includes a wide variety of shaped forgings, pinions, rotors, spindles, rings, discs, sleeves and hollow bored shafts. Sorel Forge produces open-die forging from 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg) to 59,000 pounds (27,000 kg).

  SF-2000

PDFEvolution of material. The highly sophisticated industry requirements of today’s modern world requires material that offers optimum performance. The molding industry requirements in term of characteristics are increasing accordingly.

Quality comes first. Continuous improvement of Sorel Forge’s mold steel grades has led to a premium grade, SF-2000. It offers outstanding performance in the most stringent mold applications.

Innovative. The well balanced chemistry of SF-2000 offers superior hardenability in large molds. SF-2000 is an improved AISI P-20 material, a Chromium and Molybdenum base Mold Steel. SF-2000’s high hardenability is a combination of the fine balance of generic elements of AISI P-20 and the addition of up to 0.5% Nickel. This combination of elements moves the “F” and “P” Transformation curves and avoids the ferrite-perlite phases during the cooling process of larger blocks.

SF-2000 microstructure consists of tempered bainite. The benefits of this type of structure is: improved isotropic properties, minimum distortion on the finish mould and superior polishability.

Dependable. SF-2000 thru hardened mould steel offers mould makers high machinability and great polishability enhancing better economic efficiency. SF-2000, while polished using proper technique, yields superior graining and mirror finish. SF-2000 quality means high reliability for a high quality product.

Looking ahead. SF-2000 is the grade of choice for the ever-increasing mold dimensions. SF-2000 mold block made by special densifying forging process on Sorel Forge’s 5000 tons press offer optimum consolidation of the largest sections and favour higher homogeneity and higher polishability.

Ahead of the times. SF-2000 is ideal for ever increasing automotive applications. The heat treat procedure used in the making of SF-2000 offers a very stable product. It prevents distortion under normal machining process*. SF-2000 also comes in two hardness ranges (31-34 Rc) and (34-38 Rc) for optimum high gloss polishability and high wear resistance. SF-2000’s chemistry provides a product that achieves all the stringent mold steel requirements, while facilitating post-production mold maintenance. It offers better weldability and machinability than those with higher Nickel content.

*Sorel Forge recommends a stress relief when sections are of different thickness or/and when deep cavities/pockets are present in the mould.

The grade for high performance. SF-2000 is the grade for the high demanding mold steel industry. SF-2000 is a superior product made to perform and it offers a hardened grade* with high stability, high machinability, high polishability, easily weldable and supported by our “Material and Labour” warranty, your guarantee for unmatched quality.
